Climate Policy Officer, LE4
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
The Australian High Commission (AHC) in Nairobi is recruiting a new position to join our Political and Economic Section. We are looking for someone to support a new Climate Counsellor and to increase Australia’s engagement on climate issues across Africa. Our ideal candidate is someone who is upbeat, proactive and enjoys collaboration.
Under general direction, the Climate Policy Officer will assist with research and analysis, outreach activities, travel program support, diplomatic communications and related record keeping.
This position is for an initial six months, with potential for extension. Commencing consolidated monthly salary for LE4.1 is Kes. 215,354.00.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor, analyse and report on climate and energy policy and transition issues across Africa, and how they impact Australia.
- Support implementation of public and strategic communications to promote Australian climate initiatives and broader climate objectives, including regarding Australia’s (UNFCCC) COP agenda.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders as required, including media contacts, policy makers, think tanks and development institutions.
- Conduct preparatory work in support of the AHC’s Climate Counsellor’s engagements with African interlocutors, and with other extra-regional countries through their diplomatic representatives.
- Assist with the preparation of logistics to arrange visits to countries in the region by the AHC’s Climate Counsellor and appropriately disseminate visit outcomes and follow up on action items.
- Support traditional and social media engagement efforts to promote Australia’s climate diplomacy.
- Plan and manage visits by senior officers from Australia, including preparation of elements of visit programs and briefs, logistics and other activities.
- Manage and maintain databases and record keeping relating to key stakeholders and communications, budgets and administrative processes.
- Perform other duties and backup as required.
Qualifications/Experience/Behaviours
- Exceptional ability to communicate effectively and professionally.
- Well-developed organisational skills, with the ability to concurrently manage different administrative processes over long periods of time, prioritise efforts and apply good judgement.
- High-level stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, including the ability to anticipate and respond to the needs of diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated knowledge of political and economic climate change dynamics in Africa is highly desirable.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications would be valued.
- The ability to write clearly and succinctly is essential.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills and flexibility in meeting changing AHC requirements.
