Background

The Stop Financing Factory Farming (S3F) campaign is seeking a new Coordinator, to take the campaign to the next level.

Across the globe, industrial livestock operations are a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, biodiversity loss, land and social conflicts, and animal cruelty. These harms disproportionately impact women, Indigenous peoples and low-income communities of color. Yet, Public Development Banks (PDBs) are financing giant meat companies under the guise of “development.” Our research has found that in the past decade, the top 5 development banks poured $4.5 billion into industrial livestock companies.

Just as campaigns to stop public financing for coal led to increased coal divestment from the private sector, stopping factory farm investments by development finance institutions is a key step in a broader push to shift financial sector investments away from industrial livestock production toward more sustainable, climate-friendly food systems and agriculture. As result, a diverse coalition of groups launched together a global campaign that aims to shift public development finance away from industrial animal agriculture, initially targeting multilateral development banks and their funds, such as IFC/World Bank Group, and regional MDBs, including the InterAmerican Development Bank Group, Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and European Investment Bank (EIB).

The campaign started in 2020 and is governed by a Steering Committee composed of seven organizations: Sinergia Animal, Friends of the Earth U.S, Global Forest Coalition, Bank Information Center, Feedback, World Animal Protection and International Accountability Project.

About the role

This position will play a vital role in the coalition, working with the steering committee to lead the collaborative work of the campaign, develop strategy, coordinate and facilitate the coalition, and lead fundraising and campaign delivery processes. This role would suit someone with strong skills and demonstrable experience in:

• Project management and coordination: managing projects across multiple working groups, delivering parallel workstreams, and designing new processes and structures to enhance the coalition’s work.

• Facilitating a diverse, multicultural, and multi-sectoral coalition, with a keen ability to effectively communicate and work with teams across different time zones and languages, harnessing the advantages that diversity brings.

⚫ Campaign planning and delivery, including collaborative development of campaign strategies, fostering coalition identity, community, and momentum, and leveraging significant social, political, and cultural events to maximize our impact. The coordinator will report to the steering committee of the campaign, which will involve working closely with all its members. The role will be hosted by Friends of the Earth US on behalf of the campaign.

Friends of the Earth US is an environmental and social justice organization with more than 4 million members and activists in the US. Its Food and Agriculture Program works to rapidly transition our food system away from corporate controlled, industrial agriculture to a food system that is regenerative, healthy and just.
