A worldwide community of informed, inspired, committed citizens engaged in confronting the challenges facing humanity.
Our Purpose
CIVICUS is dedicated to pursuing a world such that:
citizen action is a predominant feature of the political, economic and cultural life of all societies, private action for the public good is expressed by a rich and diverse array of organizations operating sometimes apart and sometimes in dialogue with government and business, and a healthy society is one in which there is an equitable relationship among citizens, their associations and foundations, business and governments.
CIVICUS’ special purpose, therefore, is to help nurture the foundation, growth, protection and resourcing of citizen action throughout the world and especially in areas where participatory democracy, freedom of association of citizens and their funds for public benefit are threatened.
Our Commitment
As a global alliance of citizens and their organizations, we help advance regional, national and international initiatives to strengthen the capacity of civil society. In partnership with our members, we are committed to:
strengthening the visibility and understanding of civil society, working to develop a more supportive environment of laws, policies, and regulations, developing permanent, self-sustaining, and creative resource mechanisms, having an open forum, serving to facilitate and establish cross-sectorial dialogue, exchange information, develop a common understanding and shared identity, solidarity, cooperation, and communication within civil society from various regions, and promote a common vision about the role of civil society.

Background:
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a huge difference in the world, improving the lives of millions?
Launch your own charity through our fully-funded program and lead your own project dedicated to solving some of the biggest problems in the world.
Too many charity jobs focus on work that doesn’t seem to make a real difference to people’s lives, focusing more on fundraising and impressive communication than on truly solving big problems.
Our two-month Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program gives you the training, funding, and mentorship you need to launch your own organisation dedicated to tackling global inequalities at scale.
Applications are open until March 24th – for more information, visit our website or attend one of our online information sessions.About Charity Entrepreneurship
Great charity work is one of the most direct and effective ways we can improve the world. Yet recent research showed something incredible: the best charities are more than 100 times more effective than average ones. At Charity Entrepreneurship, we’re on a mission to launch more of these very best charities that make a transformative difference in the world. We have a proven model, with more than 40 organisations launched and 35 million people reached through their work. What we need is great founders to start more of these field-leading projects.
Our research team spends more than 5,000 hours a year identifying new solutions to tackling some of the biggest problems in the world – from improving education quality and job opportunities for people living in poverty to reducing environmental pollution and rates of newborn mortality. We then find people like you with a drive to make the world a better place and the talent to build incredible new organisations. Think startups, but solely focused on making the world a better place.
Within a few years of launching, our charities have been recognised as some of the very best in the world and supported by many of the biggest funders of charitable work – from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to USAID and GiveWell. To take one example, the Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP) was founded through our program in 2021 by Lucia Coulter and Jack Rafferty – a former doctor and former consultant – with just £50,000 in funding. LEEP now operates in more than 20 countries, partnering with governments from Malawi to Pakistan. Their work is projected to save 46 million children from lead paint exposure over the coming decades.
Description:
About the program
Our program was designed by experts who successfully launched their own field-leading charities from scratch. We teach you everything you need to know to do the same – from evidence reviews to intervention design to operations – through applied, cohort-based learning. By the end of the program, you’ll have matched with a co-founder and submitted a funding proposal for your very own nonprofit.
